New Hall is a Catholic independent day and boarding school for girls and boys aged one to 19. The school occupies the historic former Palace of Beaulieu and sits within extensive grounds at the heart of the wider community.
The school follows a distinctive diamond model. Children are educated together from nursery to age 11, followed by single-sex lessons for girls and boys between 11 and 16. Sixth-form teaching then returns to a co-educational model. This gives families the option of one school journey from the early years through to A levels, while combining co-educational and single-sex teaching at different stages.
New Hall also provides a broad programme of sport, music, performing arts, clubs and other activities. Day, flexible and full boarding arrangements are available for eligible age groups, giving families a range of options according to their circumstances. Admissions, fees, scholarships and bursaries are managed directly by the school.
King Edward VI Grammar School
Chelmsford’s education offer extends beyond the schools at Beaulieu. The city is also home to King Edward VI Grammar School, commonly known as KEGS, which provides selective education for boys from Years 7 to 11 and has a co-educational sixth form.
King Edward VI Grammar School received particularly strong recognition in its February 2026 Ofsted inspection. Both achievement and post-16 provision were judged to be Exceptional, the highest level under Ofsted’s renewed inspection framework. Inspectors highlighted pupils’ progress, the breadth of learning and the quality of the sixth-form experience.
The sixth form welcomes both boys and girls, including students joining from other schools in Year 12. As a selective school, entry requirements and oversubscription criteria apply, and proximity to the school does not guarantee a place.
