Ask Halesworth residents what they love about their town, and many will mention the pretty town centre with its collection of enticing shops. Head for The Thoroughfare for some of the best places to shop, eat and drink. Like many historic towns, Halesworth grew around its market, and there are still local produce and antique markets held here today.
Pause from browsing among the stalls or welcoming independent shops to take a break at one of Halesworth’s heritage inns. Try The Angel, the White Hart or the White Swan, or pick up a pastry at the Black Dog Deli. Suffolk’s lush countryside creates the perfect local larder, making eating out or food shopping in Halesworth an absolute joy.
A family day in Halesworth
We love the Millennium Green in Halesworth. At 44 acres, it’s the largest millennium green in the country, a haven of open fields, meadows and woods, and one of the best places in Suffolk for a family bike ride. RSPB Minsmere Nature Reserve is another good spot for a day out in the fresh air, and there’s junior golf at Halesworth Golf Course.
Suffolk is rich in visitor attractions, and Halesworth itself is home to a town museum (housed in the lovely Victorian railway station building) and an aircraft museum at the former RAF airfield. Take the town trail to find out more about Halesworth’s history.
Spend a happy afternoon meeting the animals at Oasis Camel Park, or head slightly out of town to Framlingham and Orford Castles. Waveney Valley Leisure Centre is just eight miles away, and then there’s the glorious Suffolk coast…

Pop the kids, the dog or your fishing gear in the car, and within minutes you can be in Southwold with its famous pier and colourful beach huts. Take the ferry from Southwold to locals’ favourite, Walberswick or head slightly inland to beautiful Blythburgh.
Halesworth has an idyllic setting among Suffolk’s ancient woods and meadows, surrounded by gentle fields and valleys. It’s dotted with pretty villages and criss-crossed with paths and bridleways. If you love a walk or bike ride through the English countryside, the Blythe Valley is the perfect spot. You can live in Halesworth for years and still find a new route to walk or a traditional pub to try every single weekend.
Easy Connections
Halesworth is six miles from the A12. You can be in Ipswich or Norwich within the hour, and it’s not much further to Bury St Edmunds. These larger places are popular spots for shopping and theatre trips, as well as offering a wide range of career opportunities.
The historic Suffolk town gives you the best of both worlds: it feels wonderfully rural, but it’s just over two hours by train from Halesworth station to London Liverpool Street. Stansted Airport is 60 miles from Halesworth, and the drive to the ferry terminal in Felixstowe takes around an hour.
Education
There’s a choice of nurseries and primary schools in Halesworth. Edgar Sewter and Holton st Peter primary schools are both within walking distance of the Hopkins Homes development at Chediston Place, and there’s a secondary school, Bungay High School, in the neighbouring town.
There are further and higher education establishments across the county, including a Suffolk New College campus at Halesworth itself. Fee-paying schools in the area include Saint Felix in Southwold and there are also specialist schools in Suffolk.
