Less Maintenance, More Living: Why Gordon and Pam Chose to Buy New

After years of renovating older properties, Mr and Mrs Kelly discovered that a brand-new Hopkins home could offer everything they were looking for, without the upkeep.

Having lived in Woolpit for 11 years, Mr and Mrs Kelly had no desire to leave the village they had come to know and love. With established friendships and a strong connection to the local community, they wanted to find a home that would better suit their lifestyle while allowing them to remain somewhere familiar.

After spending two years searching for the right property, they found their answer at The Elms, a Hopkins Homes development in Woolpit.

But buying a brand-new home wasn't something they had initially considered.

Discovering the benefits of buying new

Having completed four major property renovations over the years, Mr Kelly was no stranger to the work involved in transforming an older house.

Initially, the couple had been searching for a bungalow, but finding one that suited their needs proved difficult. Many of the properties they viewed required considerable work, something they were keen to avoid after years of renovation projects.

"We've renovated four properties over the years, and although we've enjoyed making them our own, we were ready for something that wouldn't require the same amount of work," Mr Kelly explained.

It was Mrs Kelly who suggested considering a new-build home. While Mr Kelly had previously preferred older properties, a visit to The Elms soon changed his perspective.

"I'd never really considered buying a new build before, but visiting Hopkins Homes completely changed my mind."

After meeting Sales Consultant Jason and viewing several homes at the development, Mr Kelly was impressed by both the quality of the properties and the professionalism of the team.

"Jason was fantastic from the beginning. He was knowledgeable, professional and really took the time to show us around. Everyone we've dealt with at Hopkins Homes has been incredibly helpful and welcoming."

What began as a suggestion from Mrs Kelly soon became the ideal solution for their next chapter.

Less maintenance, more time to enjoy life

For the Kellys, one of the biggest advantages of buying new was the opportunity to leave behind the ongoing maintenance of an older property.

Their previous home had undergone a complete refurbishment when they purchased it 11 years earlier. However, as time passed, they could see that further improvements would soon be needed.

"When you buy an older property, you have to consider what might need updating and how much that could cost. Having been through several renovations ourselves, we knew how much time and money can go into them. Buying a good-quality new home just made sense to us."

Moving into their new Hopkins home has meant saying goodbye to lengthy renovation projects and the prospect of costly updates.

With fresh interiors, modern appliances and everything ready from the day they moved in, the couple can now spend more time enjoying their home rather than working on it.

"Everything is new, it's easy to keep clean and we haven't had to do any decorating. It's lovely to be able to move in and simply enjoy the house."

Finding a home with a manageable garden was another important consideration. Having previously enjoyed gardening, the couple wanted an outdoor space they could appreciate without the same level of upkeep.

"We wanted a garden that would be easy to look after. Larger gardens can be lovely, but they also come with a lot of maintenance, so this suits us perfectly."

Their new home offers a more manageable space, giving them the freedom to enjoy their surroundings without the responsibilities that came with their previous property.

A warmer, more energy-efficient home

Alongside the reduced maintenance, the energy efficiency of their new home has been another welcome benefit.

Designed with modern insulation and heating technology, their Hopkins home offers a comfortable living environment throughout the year.

"One of the real advantages of buying new is how well insulated the homes are. It makes such a difference to how comfortable the house feels, and it's reassuring to know it can be more economical to run."

Their home features an air source heat pump, with underfloor heating downstairs and radiators upstairs. Although the technology was new to them, they have found it straightforward to live with.

"It's incredibly easy. We hardly have to think about it. The heating comes on when it's needed, and the house stays lovely and warm."

The couple have also been impressed by how well their home retains warmth.

"The insulation is excellent. Even when it's cooler outside, the house holds its warmth really well, so we don't find ourselves needing the heating on all the time."

With energy efficiency an increasingly important consideration for homeowners, the Kellys appreciate the comfort and reassurance that comes with a well-insulated, modern home, alongside the potential for lower running costs.

Staying connected to the community they love

While finding a more manageable home was important, remaining in Woolpit was equally high on their list.

After more than a decade in the village, the couple had built lasting friendships and developed a real sense of belonging.

"Woolpit is such a lovely, friendly village. You can walk down the road and people will stop to say hello or have a chat. We've got to know so many people over the years, and that sense of community is really important to us."

Being able to move into a new home without leaving their established community made The Elms particularly appealing.

The development itself also left a lasting impression, with its thoughtfully arranged homes, attractive green spaces and natural surroundings.

"It's a beautifully laid-out development. The houses have a nice amount of space between them, and there are lovely green areas and ponds. It has a really comfortable, welcoming feel."

For the couple, that feeling was immediate.

"Sometimes you just know when somewhere feels right. We both had that feeling when we came here."

A positive experience from beginning to end

Throughout their move, Mr and Mrs Kelly have appreciated the support provided by the Hopkins Homes team, particularly Jason and Georgie at The Elms.

From their initial visit to settling into their new home, they felt reassured that help was always available when needed.

"Everyone has been so helpful throughout the process. Whenever we've had a question, someone has been there to answer it, and anything that needed attention has been dealt with quickly. It's made a real difference."

Having initially been unsure whether a new-build property would be right for them, Mr Kelly's experience has left him with an entirely different outlook.

Now happily settled into their new home, the couple are confident they made the right decision.

"We're absolutely delighted with our new home. It's warm, comfortable and so easy to look after. It's everything we were hoping for."

And when asked what advice he would give to anyone considering a new-build home, Mr Kelly's answer was simple.

"I'd definitely recommend visiting Hopkins Homes at The Elms. Come and have a look for yourself and speak to Jason and the team. We're so pleased we did."
